In August this year, I set myself a years worth of goals and reflected on the year that had gone by. You can read all about my goals for the year ahead here.
I made some goals for the month of August to hopefully get me closer to my yearly goals. If I am honest I think I had a few too many goals in August. I didn’t really have a focus for the month of August I just tried to do bits of everything. My biggest mistake this month was not having a singular focus.
Past Blog + Goals Reports
September came and went so quickly and while I did try and focus more I struggled with bloggers overwhelm. In September, I was able to write three new posts and update some older posts with the lessons I have learned since writing them.
Another month done and dusted, this time of year always seems to disappear on me. I'm still working out what works and what doesn't work for me.
I feel like I didn't really put in the effort I was hoping to have done this month. A number of times I didn't participate in the good share posts of the FB groups I'm in because I was too tired.
Most good FB groups I have found are on USA time which means I have to set alarms to go off in the middle of the night so I can share on the post before it's "too late".
I found if I waited until morning I didn't get very many (if any) shares because after 8 hours most people have turned off notifications for the post.
Still I have joined a few other FB groups this month (non blogging related) and am enjoying the group vibes so far.
I have been learning how to use illustrator lately and I have just created my first planner dividers with customisable tabs.
Grow my Pinterest views from 3k to 5k. I am looking into investing in a scheduling system and possibly a Pinterest guide / course. Since I am still working on writing new posts and implementing Michelle’s course I am not wanting to overload myself with courses. I will continue to manually work on my Pinterest account this month and see how much I can grow it organically.
Completed. I started a trial with tailwind which has helped me reach my 5k Pinterest views this month. I still have a lot more to learn to really get the most out of this service but I can definitely see it's value.
Write, Edit, Link and Pin FOUR new blog posts. I decided to up the blog post goal this month. I have an ambitious goal of reaching fifty blog posts on my site by Christmas and a grand goal to reach over a hundred posts by August next year.
Failed. I only published three blog posts this month even though I half wrote another two posts I just really struggled with finishing them and posting them. I now have a total of twenty-two published blog posts. Just twenty-eight more to go before Christmas.
October Blog Posts
Reach my tenth and eleventh thousand dollars before Christmas. I am confident that I should be able to achieve this as I’m already more than half way there. I will have a post about this soon my my blog and I will tell you how I will spend them both.
Reached my tenth thousand dollars | Read about it here
I love creating my thousand dollars, it gives me such a sense of empowerment.
Since the contributions to my thousand dollar account come from things like loose change from lunches or refunds from money I’ve already spent, it gives me the opportunity to make a decision that I might not have if it weren’t collected together.
I am still working on my eleventh, I am hopeful I can reach this one before Christmas. I cannot wait to see just how far I can take this project. And to think it all started with an idea and notebook.
September Blog Posts
Continue to work through the lessons in Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. I know my blog is a complete baby (it's really only three-ish months old), but I am hopeful that this will actually be of benefit. I can only imagine having to go back through years worth posts and update them with the lessons from Michelle’s course.
So my intention is to (hopefully) get most of it right the first time round. It might take me a little bit longer to see results than those who already have established blogs and audiences, but I have to start where I am.
Update | I have made my first affiliate income and I am so excited. I made a whole $1.40USD. Obviously I will need to reach the minimum payout, before I see that $1.40 in my bank.
My Favourite Affiliate Programs
I have been using Photoshop for over 10 years now and I have just started learning Illustrator. I have both Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 versions that I am using for the moment. Even though the new CC version have some really cool new features, I am happy to continue with CS5 for a while longer.
I am looking at opening an etsy shop soon to sell some of my new designs I have been creating with photoshop and illustrator this past month. I will also be listing the designs on my website too.
I love this site, I have been buying my books from the book depository for about 8 years now. I hardly ever buy books any other way, partly because most book stores in my area have closed down and partly because free shipping (and I am slightly antisocial)
Shopify is the reason you are able to read this post. I cannot say how much I am loving being able to start a blog and shop in one. I still have plenty to learn about online business and the art of blogging but shopify has made the process so easy for me to learn and grow.
I made my first commission from this affiliate program. What is more exciting than the $1.40 I earned is knowing that someone has taken their first steps towards starting their online journey too. I wish you all the best and thank you so much for your support.
Blog News and Lessons Learned
This month I have taken some time to learn Illustrator and I am loving it. Over the past two months I have really started to cultivate my creative side. I admit over the last 4 years I have really neglected this side of me and I regret it tremendously.
I now know that being creative is a very important part of who I am and I cannot function without it. I am making my creative "me time" a higher priority in my life again and I feel amazing.
I am still finding that I am getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things I should be doing. I just keep reminding myself to take it one step at a time. Starting a Blog + Business is a full time job and I already have a full time job. So I need to remember that I will take longer to achieve things some other bloggers can.
Since I didn't participate in many FB group shares and repin threads this month I noticed a big drop in page views. I also only published three new blog posts last month. My blog is still new and hasn't really found it's direction yet. It will take some time for me to find my true direction, my voice and my audience.
Monthly Goals for November 2017
Continue to Grow my Pinterest Views. For this I will continue to work towards creating pin worthy content + images, and take some time to learn tailwind. I am working implementing a strategy for my Pinterest account.
Write, Edit, Link and Pin FOUR new blog posts. I decided to keep my blog post goal of four posts for this month since I didn't reach it last month. I will keep reminding myself that each post gets me closer and closer to my ultimate goal. Just keep posting, posting, posting.
Get creative in Adobe Photoshop + Illustrator. I want to create a number of pattern designs and planner printables to help me stay creative and organised.
Open my Etsy shop. I want to start listing some digital products on etsy this month. I would really like share my creative designs and make a little extra cash to support my creative and blogging endeavours. I feel that Etsy has an audience that would be my ideal reader so it is a great way to get to know them better by serving them.
Society6 and Spoonflower. This month I would like to learn how to use sites such as Society6 an Spoonflower and maximise the value of my creative endeavours in Photoshop and Illustrator.
Reach my eleventh thousand dollars before Christmas. I love completing my thousand dollars savings challenges, it gives me such a sense of empowerment.
Since the contributions to my thousand dollar account come from things like loose change from lunches, small dividends or refunds from money I’ve already spent (medicare rebates etc), it gives me the opportunity to make a decision that I might not have if it weren’t collected together.
I really need to get myself organised and committed this month. I know I get stuck in the ideas stage and that has really held me back. I want to do all the things, but then I could also do all those things over there too or what if I did this thing instead. Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?
Someone help me focus please.
If you are interested in starting a handmade side hustle a good place to start would be opening an Etsy shop. While I encourage people to get their own site, Etsy is a great place to start and test the waters with your products.
When you are ready to really build your handmade business I recommend getting your own site. Buy your domain as early as possible to secure your brand name.
However if you are serious about creating your handmade business you should read my post about starting your blog + Biz with shopify. I highly encourage you to establish your own website and build up your brand as early as possible.
