How to Start Your Online Business and Blog with Shopify. Start Selling Your Handmade Products With Your Own E-Commerce Website

In this post I will take you through the process of starting an online business and blog with shopify. Creating a side business and income that is locationally independent is my greatest dream. I love the idea of being able to take my business with me without losing loyal customers just because of location.

I would love to continue my work whether I am travelling around Australia or starting my family. These are the main reasons I chose to start my online blog and business journey.

I personally use and recommend shopify to host your business + blog. I know that a lot of handmade / creative small businesses start out with sites like Etsy or eBay. These are both good options and can be used as well as creating your own online shop.

So you want to start building your online business and blog? Awesome. Lets get started. 

Step One : What Will Your Business Offer?

First thing your will want to do is to decide what you would like to sell. Are you a talented Seamstress? An Illustrator? Digital Designer? Crafter? Artist? Social Media Genius? What is the thing that you have to offer the world?

This is the first thing you will to decide because it will determine everything going forward, so make sure you know exactly what you intend for your business. Once you know this you can start to visualise who would buy your product, what they are like, what they are searching for and the problems that they need solved.
Take the time to figure this important step out. Think about your product/s and who would want and use them. This is your target audience; get to know the type of person they are. You need to know who you are offering your product to so you can sell them what they need.

Step Two : Choose Your Domain Name / Business Name

This can be the most difficult or the easiest step of the whole process. This is where knowing what your product and audience will help. Below are some questions that will help get the creative name ideas flowing.

If you already have a business name in mind, congratulations. You can go straight to step three.

Questions you should ask yourself to help define your name

  • Who buys your product and what do they like?
  • Who/What do they follow on their social media accounts?
  • What would they search to find your product?
  • Do you want it to be your personal name?
  • Abstract collection of words?
  • Object / product / topic related? 

Ideally you will want to choose something that is 

  • Memorable. Customers need to remember where they got their awesome product from so when asked they can answer "I got it from this amazing website call {}"
  • Related to you topic / product. If I am looking for handmade candle containers, I am not going to search for pixiecoffeedust. 
  • Longevity. You want something you can work with years down the road.
  • The dot com. Choose a name that has the ".com" version available. Honestly it's what users expect it to be. You don't want to choose because someone already has, because you will just be sending that person all your customers.

Step Three : Purchase Your Domain Name

As soon as you have decided on a business name you will want to make sure it's domain is available and if it is purchase it ASAP. I personally used to purchase my domain. Their prices are usually under $15. But feel free to purchase your domain through shopify or any other domain register of your choice.

I personally paid a lot more for because I was determined to have it and someone else already owned it. So they set their selling price and I was willing to pay it to get the domain I wanted.

Sure I wish my domain could have cost what would cost, but I wouldn't have been happy with any other domain.

You may however, not be as attached to your first name of choice and are willing to explore other options. If your first choice is taken or costs more than you are willing to pay, use the search bar to find a domain you want at the price you are willing to pay for.

The reason you need to purchase your own domain name instead of going with the free domain option on any e-commerce or blog hosting site is, professionalism. Your site will look infinitely more professional and trustworthy with than if you had a website like

It is seriously worth the money and effort to buy your domain name up front and save yourself the headache of changing it later. 

Step Four : Open your shopify store

Go to shopify and start your online store, fill out your email, password and store name.

Why I love Shopify

When I was looking at starting my online adventure I knew I wanted to try blogging and I wanted to create and design products to sell. I had no idea how to start a blog or a e-commerce website.

I read countless blog posts about starting a blog on a Wordpress platform and hosting it with XYZ hosting company and then purchasing and integrating an e-commerce provider to your wordpress hosted on XYZ hosting company.

And honestly I just didn't think I could do all that. Perhaps I could have, but I didn't want to. I just wanted something that had Blog + Business together. That's when I found shopify.

Step Five : Set up your payment methods

Shopify has various payment methods to choose from including shopify payments, Paypal and more. This step is vital if you wish to receive payments from your customers for your products. 

Settings > Payments > Fill out you payment preferences.

Step Six : Choose Your Plan

Purchase your plan now and get it out of the way. You will still get your free 14 days put this just saves you worrying about this step later. I know you are going to love your trial I did. 

I started with the basic plan (which is currently $29 per month), if you want to later you can move up to the popular plan later on (which is $79 per month).

Settings > Account > Choose a Plan

Step Seven : Set up you shipping Methods

Do this before you add all your inventory into your new shop so that shipping preferences are ready to go.

This step is less important if you intend to sell digital products such as printables, ebooks, audio files etc. But it is good to have in place if you ever want to sell an item that needs shipping.

Settings > Shipping > Choose your shipping rates for domestic and international.

Step Eight : Add Pages to your Website

Pages you will need will vary from business to business, but most will need an about me page, a contact page and a FAQ page. 

Take you time here and write a really informative about me page. This is how your customers will get to know the you behind the business. Give them a reason to stay on your site and make a purchase.

Online Store > Pages > Add Page > Fill out your page details

Step Nine : Add Products to you store

The fun part finally! Listing all your amazing products into your new shop. So exciting you're nearly ready to open up shop. Are you excited? I am!

Products > Add Product > Fill out the product listing with a title, description, photos and pricing. Add your products into their categories.

For example if you were to sell kids clothing and accessories, you will have different categories for items such as headwear, rompers etc 

Step Ten : Add a blog

Start your shops blog and to talk all things related to your shop and audience. Promote your products within your blog posts and create great pin worthy graphics to help market your brand new business. Create some behind the scenes lifestyle posts to give your customers ideas of how your products will fit into their lives.
